If you have a foggy day…

For centuries, people living in the North-East of Italy have had to deal with the foggy weather which strikes this region every autumn and winter; the fog isn’t the best travel-companion when we are tired after a long working day and we can’t wait to get home.

These days we have plenty of tools… smartphones, GPS, sat-nav, any gadget can help us reach our final destination. We just need to drive carefully and listen to these robot-instructions.

Back in time, there were maps. However, the fishermen of a tiny little island near Venice didn’t particularly like them, you can imagine, paper doesn’t turn to be very handy on humid autumn days. But they were creative and smart and they thought:

“How about painting my house of a very bright color to make sure I will recognize it from far? After a long foggy day spent fishing on my boat, I will be delighted to see I’m heading to my vivid house walls!”

Very shortly, the island became one of the most colorful places in the world.

There might still be a problem, though: what can we possibly do if we have a foggy day, nowadays? Can our smartphone help? Well, if you have a foggy day… get lost somewhere colorful like Burano, a tiny little island in the Venetian Lagoon.

E’ da secoli che noi abitanti del Nord-Est facciamo i conti con la nebbia ogni autunno e inverno. Non è la miglior compagna di viaggio, soprattutto quando siamo stanchi dopo una lunga giornata di lavoro e non vediamo l’ora di arrivare a casa.

Al giorno d’oggi smartphone, GPS e navigatori satellitari ci aiutano a raggiungere la nostra destinazione, basta guidare con prudenza e ascoltare le istruzioni robotiche.

In passato esistevano le mappe. A dire il vero, non piacevano granché ai pescatori di una piccola isola della laguna veneta: si sa, la carta non è il massimo nelle umide giornate autunnali. Ma ebbero una trovata creativa ed intelligente:

“Perchè non dipingere casa mia di un colore acceso in modo da riconoscerla anche da lontano? Dopo una lunga e grigia giornata di nebbia trascorsa a pescare in barca, sarò felice di tornare verso i colori di casa”.

Molto presto, l’isola divenne uno dei luoghi più colorati del mondo.

Un problema però è rimasto: cosa possiamo fare al giorno d’oggi quando abbiamo una giornata grigio-nebbia? Possiamo farci aiutare dal nostro smartphone? Beh, in caso di giornate grigio-nebbia… consigliamo di perdersi in un posto colorato come Burano.
